The third generation Accord was introduced in Japan and Europe in 1985, the rest of the world in 1986. It had a very striking shape, bearing a resemblance to the second and third generation Preludes.

In 1990 a new, larger Honda Accord based on the "CB" chassis was launched in Japan. This generation was the first not to feature a three-door model, and the first one to be exclusively sold by the Honda Clio dealer network in Japan.
